Korean Raptor Robot Can Almost Beat DARPA’s Cheetah

Image
The field of biomimetics is a varied one. From large helicopters to tiny nano-bots, the scope is massive. Scientists have looked to nature for sometime now in order to reproduce it in a way that will be beneficial to mankind. Boston Dynamics , funded by  DARPA , created a running robot called Cheetah, a quadruped that could run at speeds of over 29 mph. To put that into perspective, it is faster than Usain Bolt, the fastest man on the planet. But they didn’t stop there. In fact the team then created Wildcat, a similar quadruped, which was designed around the Cheetah, but could run at fast speeds over rough terrain. The US is not the only country that is showing great interest in this field. Scientists from KAIST have designed and built a new robot that has almost matched Cheetah’s speed record.  This design wasn’t built around a cat like frame, instead the team opted for something that isn’t alive anymore; the Velociraptor. This two-legged machine, called Raptor, was created by

Man Flies Drone Outside Hospital & Gets Arrested

Image
In a classic case of “what not to do when you’re bored”,  a New York man was arrested after he decided to fly his drone outside of a New York hospital . According to the 49-year-old, he had just dropped off his mom for an appointment when he decided to get out his drone  (a DIJ Phantom 2) and fly it around the hospital. I guess the “real” problem began when the drone kept being spotted by doctors and medical staff outside of the hospital’s exam windows as they were examining patients. Staff called the police and the man was promptly arrested for illegal surveillance activities. I don’t own a drone, but if I did, I don’t think I’d fly the thing outside of a hospital of all places, but that might just be me. The man has stated in a Facebook post that what he did was the result of a lapse in judgment and that the drone’s camera couldn’t glimpse anything through the hospital’s windows. Whether that last part’s true or not I cannot say – all I know is it seems the police might’ve thought

5000ppi Hologram Projection Phones To Arrive Next Year

Image
The advent of lifelike holograms is upon us.  We have seen celebrities who are no longer around;  appear on stage and ‘converse’ with real people thanks to new standards in holographic technology.  Imagine this type of breakthrough tech being wielded in the palm of your hand?  Well folks, we don’t have to wait too long as the technology, which makes an image ‘float’ as a 3D image in the air, is finally here. The company that has made this breakthrough,  Ostendo , has produced a hologram with a 5,000ppi projector.  It is this type of projector that should interest us, as they plan to fit it into smartphones in the second half of 2015. The hologram is created using six projectors, which layer light to create an image floating in the air,

2015: Don’t declare now, PDP govs caution Jonathan

Image
President Goodluck Jonathan President Goodluck Jonathan has been advised to tarry a little, before attempting to declare his second term ambition. Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, stated this at a meeting they had with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday night. Though the governors   were in support of the President’s bid for re-election, they said the nation’s mood was not ripe for such a declaration. Investigations by our correspondent in Abuja on Tuesday and Wednesday showed that the meeting considered the plight of the abducted Chibok schoolgirls and security challenges facing the country. It was learnt that based on these two major issues, the governors asked the President to study the mood of the nation more before considering an open declaration for re-election. Two of the governors, who were at the meeting and spoke with our correspondent separately, said that the President was advised to either visit Chib

The Internet Is Burning

Image
Online security is a horrifying nightmare.  Heartbleed .  Target .  Apple .  Linux . Microsoft .  Yahoo .  eBay .  X.509 . Whatever security cataclysm erupts next, probably in weeks or even days. We seem to be trapped in a vicious cycle of cascading security disasters that just keep getting worse.

New Search Engine Unmasks The Hackers

Image
Indexeus.net looks like it could have been a Y Combinator project. With a slick design, snappy copy, and a  bitcoin -based payment system, it looks unusually legit. But what the site is hiding is the produce of hundreds of hacking efforts from around the web. I’ve left out the link because it’s unclear if the site may deliver malware now or in the future. You can type it in if you’re curious.

PlayStation 4 Tops Xbox One In Monthly Sales Despite Xbox Sales Doubling

Image
Microsoft may have done a lot to encourage new people to buy the Xbox One by removing the Kinect from the basic bundle and dropping the price by $100 accordingly, but it still can’t catch up to the PlayStation 4. According to new numbers from NPD, Sony’s is the  top-selling U.S. next-gen console for June , which marks the sixth month in a row it has collected that honor.

BlackBerry Is One Of The Hottest Stocks Of 2014, Seriously

Image
Don’t look now, but  BlackBerry  — you know, the butt of most cell phone jokes — is mounting an impressive comeback. BlackBerry’s  stock  is up 50 percent on the year and one of the best performers in its sector. BlackBerry has been written off as dead countless times. The company is often viewed as a relic of a bygone era. Its CEO is a  blowhard , not afraid to take spats with the company public. Yet the company is creating value for its shareholders.

Forget “OK Glass,” MindRDR Is A Google Glass App You Control With Your Thoughts

Image
Google Glass has made a name for itself (somewhat infamously) as head-mounted hardware that you can control with your voice and a sliding finger. Now, a team based out of interactive studio  This Place  in London, is launching a new app that it hopes will kickstart an even more seamless way of interacting with the device: with the power of your mind. MindRDR, as the app is called, links up  Google  Glass with another piece of head-mounted hardware, the Neurosky EEG biosensor, to create a communication loop.

Humans And Computers Will Come Together For Middle Work

Editor’s note:   David Greenbaum  is CEO and co-founder of  Boost Media . Previously, David worked in venture capital and at Goldman Sachs, and was director of strategy and M&A at Interval Leisure Group. Jon Evans’ post “ Welcome To Extremistan! Check Your Career At The Door ” on TechCrunch warns of mass penury for this generation and the next as the dual horseman of the techno-apocalypse, robots and software, strip humans of their ability to make a living.

Samsung’s Race To The Bottom

Image
It’s happened before and it’s happened again – a popular commodity appears and is remade in so many permutations and from so many manufacturers that the differentiation ultimately focuses on price. When this happens, the small players sneak in with cheap hardware, the big players stumble and try to buoy sales with higher-end models (an example of this is the  Dell Adamo  as the netbook market tanked) and everyone falls down in a heap. See laptops, feature phones, and the aforementioned netbooks for further examples. Now we’re in a race to the bottom for smartphones. High flyers like LG and HTC are already flat. Now the next big player to stumble under commodity hardware is  Samsung . And it won’t be pretty.

Microsoft Tweaks Office 365 For Smaller Businesses

Image
Microsoft  today  announced  a raft of new  Office  365 plans for smaller businesses that will eventually supplant its extant offerings. The company is lowering the price of its most expensive smaller business offering — from $15 per seat per month to $12.50 — and raising the employee cap in some cases to 300 from 25.  Microsoft  has preserved a $5 per seat per month  Office 365  option that includes its cloud products,  but not desktop versions of Office proper. The moves are customer-friendly because we are in a period of  intense competition . Microsoft wants to bring people in from the cold of their past multi-year software buying cycles, while also shepherding smaller companies and businesses into its fold by selling them Office as a service at moderate price points. Google , Apple,  Dropbox  and  Box  want that same action. Far more than a trillion dollars in market cap is fighting for the right to store your files, and help you edit them. Those firms would very much pref
