From the largest technology companies to early stage investors , American high tech companies and venture capitalists are increasingly supporting startups across the African continent. Whether it’s the 16 mobile apps in Botswana that Jim Goetz mentioned in his take on Facebook’s acquisition of WhatsApp ; the launch of IBM’s new innovation centers in Lagos and Casablanca; Microsoft’s partnership with three incubators in Africa, or the African Development Bank’s recent summit on how to engage the private sector more effectively, African entrepreneurship is on investors minds. In fact, 2013 was the most active year for technology investment on the continent, according to data from CrunchBase .
The advent of lifelike holograms is upon us. We have seen celebrities who are no longer around; appear on stage and ‘converse’ with real people thanks to new standards in holographic technology. Imagine this type of breakthrough tech being wielded in the palm of your hand? Well folks, we don’t have to wait too long as the technology, which makes an image ‘float’ as a 3D image in the air, is finally here. The company that has made this breakthrough, Ostendo , has produced a hologram with a 5,000ppi projector. What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever done to promote a cause? Maybe you participated in the Ice Bucket Challenge for ALS last year, and had an ice cold bucket of water dumped over your head (while on camera, of course). Maybe you distributed information around your neighborhood. Maybe you organized a food drive to help those less fortunate during the Christmas season. When we want to bring awareness to a cause that’s near and dear to our hearts, we’re often willing to do what others think is crazy and outlandish – but where do you draw the line? Or, let me rephrase the question: If you were promoting water filtration, would you drink a glass of water made from human feces? Yes? No way – gross!? Maybe? Whether you and I would or not, it’s exactly what Microsoft founder Bill Gates did , and he even went as far as to say it even compared to the best water he’d ever tasted. It’s getting him a lot of publicity, which is exactly what he was trying to do in the first place.
